GÉANT Framework Agreement: Education and Research Built on AWS

Students, educators, and researchers are key drivers of technological innovation and the backbone of modern economies. The European research community is using AWS technologies to further invent and advance scientific discovery.

A few customers who are leading the way in education and research in Europe are the University of Liverpool and the University of York.

To get towards reaching “unlimited HPC” for students and researchers, Dell EMC, Alces Flight, and AWS are creating a unique hybrid high-performance computing (HPC) solution for the University of Liverpool, one of the UK’s leading research institutions. A fully managed on-premises HPC cluster and cloud-based HPC account have been architected for users to achieve access to the computational resources required with as little delay as possible. Listen to the podcast on using AWS to power research with the University of Liverpool and Alces Flight.

Following the collaborative solution from Dell EMC and Alces Flight on AWS and the successful installation of a hybrid HPC solution at the University of Liverpool, the University of York created an “open use” HPC solution to allow researchers of any discipline the power to transform their research. This fully managed on-premises HPC cluster and cloud-based HPC account was architected for students and researchers to access the computational resources required with as little delay as possible.

With AWS, researchers will gain instant access to facilities most of their peers at other institutions stand in a queue for, which allows them to create more diverse workloads quickly and accelerate turnaround. We look forward to working with universities across Europe to achieve greater aims in open use and assisting them in removing the constraints surrounding IT.

AWS is part of GÉANT’s innovative Cloud Catalogue. Research and education institutions in 28 countries across Europe can now run their compute, storage, and networking workloads in the AWS Cloud, with procurement, contracting, and integration taken care of by GÉANT and its National Research and Education Network (NREN) partners.

AWS services are available through AWS partners appointed on the framework, including Arcus Global, Comparex, and TI Sparkle. To get started and learn more, contact your AWS partner of choice in your country.
