To create high-fidelity digital content, such as visual effects or animation, studios need creative assets available quickly to everyone in the workflow. Nimble Studio File Transfer allows artists and studio creative partners to share, collaborate, and deliver high volumes of content without disruption to their pipeline. There is no charge to use the File Transfer feature of Nimble Studio or the downloadable File Transfer client. You pay only for Amazon S3 usage.

For existing Nimble Studio workstation customers:

Nimble Studio provides on-demand managed virtual workstations with no up-front commitments. Nimble Studio's virtual workstation pricing is based on the size of the EC2 instance you select, the length of time you use the instance, and the local storage you configure for each instance.

The workstation pricing in the table below includes the EC2 instance shown, networking between the storage and the EC2 instance within a single availability zone, and NICE DCV with data transfer out costs incurred from pixels streaming to displays. The hourly pricing supports pixel streaming up to two monitors at 4K resolution up to 60 FPS.

For Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes attached to the EC2 instance as local storage, you pay only for what you provision. Volume storage for EBS gp3 volume types is charged by the amount of GB you provision per month until you release the storage. Details for additional storage and input/output operations per second (IOPS) costs for persistent storage, which is the default configuration, are in the Amazon EBS pricing table below. If using non-persistent storage up to 500GB are included in the EC2 instance cost with the first 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s throughput. Additional IOPS and throughput incur charges. If you use the Auto Backup feature for EBS volumes, you will incur EBS Snapshot costs for storage. There is no cost for restores, and archives are not available.

As part of operating your studio infrastructure on Amazon Nimble Studio, you will need persistent group storage such as Amazon FSx for Windows or Lustre, a rendering orchestration system such as AWS Thinkbox Deadline, and an identity management system such as Active Directory (AD). If you use the defaults for a StudioBuilder deployment in Amazon Nimble Studio, you will provision a new virtual private cloud (VPC) with the following infrastructure:

  • FSx for Windows
  • AWS Managed Microsoft AD
  • AWS Thinkbox Deadline resources

If you deploy your studio with the StudioBuilder defaults, you will incur additional costs for the persistent infrastructure inside your VPC in addition to the Nimble Studio virtual workstation and EBS pricing. See estimates in the table for  Additional Costs below. Pricing may vary based on your studio configuration and utilization. These infrastructure costs will remain consistent regardless of the number of artists using your studio.

For each unique user launching a Windows streaming workstation, you will be charged a Microsoft remote desktop service (RDS) subscriber access license (SAL) fee of $4.19 for the month in which the streaming session occurred. Users are uniquely identified by the authentication type and username used to connect to their streaming session. The RDS SAL fee is charged in full for each user who launches a streaming session during the month and is not pro-rated, regardless of when users first launch streaming sessions in the month.

Pricing examples

  • Example 1
  • Studio X is working on one episode of a TV show and has 25 artists on staff. The studio administrators provision their virtual workstation for all-around performance and cost savings, using g4dn.4xlarge with 16 vCPUs, 64GB of memory, and a provisioned 1TB EBS volume, with 3,000 provisioned IOPS, and 125 provisioned MB/s throughput for each volume. All artist virtual workstations are running on Windows for an average of 200 hours a month.

Reminder: For each unique user launching a Windows streaming workstation you will be charged a Microsoft remote desktop service (RDS) subscriber access license (SAL) fee of $4.19 for the month in which the streaming session occurred.

  • Example 2
  • Studio Y is a visual effects (VFX) studio working on creature shots for an upcoming film. Studio Y has 50 artists on staff working on 200 shots. 30 of their artists use the default instance type, g4dn.4xlarge for Linux with 16vCPUs and 64GB of memory for all the modeling, animation, and compositing tasks. 10 of the artists also use the default instance type, g4dn.4xlarge but use Windows for texture painting with Photoshop. The last 10 artists are the effects artists creating simulation and volumetric data out of Houdini so they need the most performant workstation, g4dn.16xlarge with 64 vCPUs and 256GB of memory for Linux. All artists are working for an average of 200 hours a month and have a provisioned 1TB EBS volume, with 10,000 provisioned IOPS, and 500 MB/s throughput for each volume.

  • Example 3 - Amazon EBS (gp3) local storage
  • Volume storage for General Purpose SSD (gp3) volumes is charged by the amount you provision in GB per month until you release the storage. All gp3 volumes include a free baseline performance of 3,000 provisioned input/output operations per second (IOPS) and 125 provisioned MB/s throughput. Additional IOPS and throughput can be provisioned independently and are charged by the amount you provision in IOPS per month and MB/s per month until you release the IOPS or throughput. Provisioned storage, provisioned IOPS, and provisioned throughput for gp3 volumes will be billed in per-second increments, with a 60-second minimum.

In this example, you provision a 2,000 GB volume for 12 hours (43,200 seconds) in a 30-day month with 10,000 IOPS and 500 MB/s for your volume, with Auto Backup for EBS volumes not used.

    Gp3 volume charge:
In a region that charges $0.092 per GB-month, you would be charged:
    ($0.092 per GB-month * 2,000 GB * 43,200 seconds / (86,400 seconds/day * 30-day month)) = $3.067

    Gp3 IOPS charge:
In a region that charges $0.0058 per provisioned IOPS-month, you would be charged:
    ($0.0058 per provisioned IOPS-month * (10,000 IOPS provisioned – 3,000 IOPS in the free baseline performance) * 43,200 seconds /(86,400 seconds /day * 30-day month))= $0.670

    Gp3 baseline performance charge:
In a region that charges $0.0552 per provisioned MB/s-month, you would be charged:
    ($0.0552 per provisioned MB/s-month * (500 MB/s provisioned – 125 MB/s in the free baseline performance) * 43,200 seconds /(86,400 seconds /day * 30 day-month))= $0.345

    Total charges:
    Gp3 volume charge = $3.067
    Gp3 IOPS charge = $0.670
    Gp3 baseline performance charge = $0.345
    Total: $4.082 per 30-day month
